“Do not be afraid of buying older renewed Apple products”
Update 9/20/19: watchOS 6 is available for Apple Watch Series 3 and Apple Watch Series 4 starting today. Apple Watch Series 5 comes with watchOS 6 already installed. The new software update will come to Apple Watch Series 1 and Apple Watch Series 2 later this year.
I have Diabetes and use a Continuous Glucose Meter (CGM) that gives me my glucose numbers and direction arrows every 5 minutes. It came with a small receiver, but I disliked having to carry another device in my pocket besides my phone. I liked the idea of just tapping my watch to see my blood sugar readings when out socially or while driving my vehicle. After speaking with the Dexcom tech support team, I learned that the first phones and watches to get Dexcom CGM “receiver” software updates and “follow” software updates are Apple Products and after that they work to support Samsung Products next. My Android Moto G5+ phone isn’t even supported at all. Wanting to align my technology with my health priority CGM updates, I decided to buy Apple Products for my personal phone and companion watch. So I called Apple directly and spoke with a customer service representative on how to make this transition from android to Apple with the best bang for the least buck. Her advice was “Do not be afraid of buying older renewed Apple products” and encouraged me to get the renewed Apple iWatch 3 Series and the renewed Apple iPhone 7 Series as these products will still be supported for some time.
Because my skin reacts to Aluminum, I chose the Stainless Steel iWatch 3 with the White Sport Band. It is very comfortable.
Early this summer, I added the Sugarmate App on my iPhone 7 to follow my Dexcom CGM receiver app on my iPhone 7 and set up a web account through that app for my laptop. Now I can link to the web account on all my android devices to see my Blood Glucose readings on every laptop, tablet, and even on my Moto G5+ android phone. The Sugarmate app calls your phone with a LOUD SIREN RING TONE to alert you of an URGENT LOW. I sleep pretty deep and often miss the low cgm alerts on the phone and receiver, but this Sugarmate app’s SIREN gets through and wakes me up every time. If the SIREN phone call is not answered, the software can call 911 for you and it will give your phone’s GPS location.
If you have a health emergency, you can ask Siri on your iWatch 3 to call 911 or someone on your contact list for help. Falls often happen in the bathroom, so keep your watch on at night for those bathroom trips and charge your iWatch during some other 2.5 hour block of time during the day.
